What is a Fresh 48 Session (And Why You’ll Want to Book One) | pittsburgh, pa fresh 48 photographer

There’s nothing quite like those first hours after your baby is born. You’re tired, emotional, and completely in awe of this tiny human you’ve been waiting to meet. It’s a total whirlwind — one minute you’re soaking it all in, and the next, it already feels like a blur.

And here’s the thing about those early days: they change SO fast.

Your baby will literally look different tomorrow than they do today. Their features shift, their little cheeks fill out, and before you know it, you’re folding up the newborn onesies and wondering how in the world your baby is already a month old.

That’s why Fresh 48 sessions are some of my very favorite sessions to photograph. They let you hold on to the moments that would otherwise slip by in the haze of those first few days.

So, What Exactly Is a Fresh 48 Session?

A Fresh 48 session takes place within the first day or two after your baby is born — usually at the hospital, midwife center, or even at home if you’ve had a home birth. It’s a super relaxed, no-pressure session where I capture your family’s first hours together.

Some of the moments I love capturing:

  • Baby all swaddled up in the hospital bassinet, looking so tiny
  • Mom & Dad holding + snuggling babe
  • Siblings coming to meet the baby (the reactions are always the BEST)
  • Grandparents getting that first snuggle in
  • Those small details you don’t want to forget — hospital bracelets, tiny toes, little yawns and stretches

It’s basically like hitting “pause” on one of the biggest, most life-changing days of your life.

Why These Sessions Matter

The newborn stage is wild. You’re running on adrenaline, you’re learning this brand-new little person, and you’re probably trying to remember how to swaddle while also figuring out what day of the week it is.

And while you think you’ll remember every single detail, the truth is… you won’t. It all blurs together so quickly.

Fresh 48 sessions give you a way to look back and actually see those first hours again — the joy, the awe, the chaos, the love.

One of my absolute favorite parts to photograph is siblings meeting for the first time. The way a big brother proudly climbs up on the hospital bed to peek at his new baby sister, or how a big sister leans in for a kiss… those are once-in-a-lifetime moments. And trust me, you’re going to want those photos later, when your kids are bickering over who gets the blue cup. 😉

What to Expect

Fresh 48 sessions are low-stress, especially for you as the mom. You just had a baby — you don’t need to clean your house, fix your hair perfectly, or do anything special. I’ve got you.

Here’s how it usually goes:

  1. I’ll come within the first 24–48 hours after birth, depending on when you’re ready.
  2. There’s zero pressure to “perform.” I’ll just quietly document the real moments as they happen. Don’t stress about cleaning clutter… I’ll clean and move things around as I go.
  3. Sessions last about 45–60 minutes, which is perfect for those short windows of calm between feedings and visitors.
  4. Within a couple of weeks, you’ll get your gallery — full of images that will take you right back to those first hours. Sneak peaks usually come later that same day!

Timing Is Everything

Babies change SO quickly. Even between day one and day three, you’ll see big differences. That’s why these sessions happen so early — to capture your baby when they are brand new, before that stage slips away forever.

Years from now, you’ll look at your Fresh 48 photos and remember exactly how it felt to whisper, “Hi, I’m your mom,” while holding your baby for the very first time.

Let’s Make It Happen

The day you meet your baby is a day you’ll never forget — but the details fade faster than you think. A Fresh 48 session lets you hold on to those memories in a way that feels honest and true to your family’s story.

If you’re expecting, I’d love to be there to capture those first hours for you.
Reach out today so we can chat about what matters most to you and get your session on the calendar — because these moments only happen once, and they are gone in a flash. ❤️
